Compass Testing Information

Compass and Basic Skills Courses

All entering students are required to take COMPASS (computer-assisted basic skills assessment), a computer based placement test.  These tests will determine if you need some review in math, English, reading, and study strategies.  The courses will give you the background you need to be successful in your other classes.    Just call for testing dates and an appointment.

What Does COMPASS include?
The computerized assessment is divided into three sections: Reading, writing and mathematics. In addition, some students may be asked to complete a writing sample.

The directions for moving through each assessment are easy to follow even if you have not used a computer before.

What if the assessment reveals a need to improve basic skills in some area?
If COMPASS assessment shows a need for specific coursework, students will be required to complete successfully those designated courses. The regional campuses offer several courses designed to improve academic skills. All courses receive a letter grade and are used to compute a student's grade point average. Coursework connections available to students who are in need of academic support include:

  • Introduction to College English (ENG 10000) 3 Credits
  • Developmental Mathematics (MATH 10004) 4 Credits
  • Introduction to College Math (MATH 10005) 3 Credits
  • Reading Strategies for College Success (US 10003) 3 Credits
  • Study Strategies for College Success (US 10006) 3 Credits
