ALEKS FAQs

What is ALEKS?
ALEKS (Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces) is a powerful artificial intelligence-based  (AI) assessment software package that zeros in on the student’s mathematical strengths and weaknesses, reports in its findings, and then, if necessary, provides a learning module to improve the student’s knowledge and skill.
What is the cost of the ALEKS placement assessment?
The initial assessment, six week learning module, and one reassessment is covered by fees already paid.
Can I practice with ALEKS before I take the placement assessment?
Sure, you can.  Sign up for an optional free trial at www.aleks.com.
Do all Kent State students take the ALEKS placement assessment?
Mathematics placement is required of all new freshmen and those transfer students who have not:
a) successfully completed a college level mathematics course at another college or university,
                                                   or
b) earned scores of 3 or higher on the Advancement Placement Calculus AB or Calculus BC test.
How long does it take to complete the ALEKS assessment?
The assessment may take around 60 to 90 minutes, so plan accordingly. Short breaks are permitted during the assessment since it is not timed. Please complete your first assessment; if you log out before completing it, you may log back in and ALEKS will resume where you left off.     The ALEKS assessment will be available 48 hours from the time of your first login. After that, it will timeout and you will not be able to complete that assessment.
Can I use my own calculator while doing the ALEKS assessment?
No, you may not.  A calculator will be provided by ALEKS when needed. You can, however, use your own paper and pencil/pen to complete the placement assessment.
If I cannot do ALEKS remotely, can I do it on campus?
Certainly!  Contact the KSU campus you wish to take your ALEKS placement and find out their weekly testing times.
If I were to come on campus to take the ALEKS reassessment, what do I need to bring?
Bring only your photo ID and KSU ID number.  Personal calculators will not be allowed.
Do I need any special software on my computer to run ALEKS?
The use of ALEKS requires installation of the ALEKS plug-in. The plug-in should install on your computer automatically the first time you access the ALEKS site. If you have trouble installing the plug-in, visit www.aleks.com/faqs/technical.  After installation of the ALEKS plug-in, restart (reboot) your computer.

If you have trouble installing the plug-in, contact the ALEKS Technical Support:
