Compass Testing Information
COMPASS and Basic Skills Courses
All new students who have not taken the ACT or SAT are required to take COMPASS, a computer based placement test. This test will determine if you need some review in English, reading, and study strategies. For math placement, all new students must take ALEKS. Transfer students who have not successfully completed a college level English or math course (developmental courses do not count), must also take COMPASS and ALEKS. The courses you place into will give you the background you need to be successful in college. COMPASS is taken on campus. Please call 440-834-4187 (Burton) or 330-888-6400 (Twinsburg) to set up an appointment. ALEKS can be taken anywhere you have functioning internet. Please login to FlashLine to complete ALEKS.
When do we offer COMPASS testing?
To find out COMPASS testing dates and times for the fall, please call 440-834-4187 (Burton) or 330-888-6400 (Twinsburg).
What does COMPASS include?
The computerized assessment is divided into two sections: reading and writing. In addition, some students may be asked to complete a writing sample.
The directions for moving through each assessment are easy to follow even if you have not used a computer before.
I'd like to take a COMPASS practice test. Is there a sample COMPASS test available?
Yes. There are some sample items from each section of the Compass test – Reading and Writing. Click here to access the sample questions and some test-taking tips!
What if the assessment reveals a need to improve basic skills in some area?
If COMPASS assessment shows a need for specific coursework, students will be required to complete successfully those designated courses. The regional campuses offer several courses designed to improve academic skills. All courses receive a letter grade and are used to compute a student's grade point average. Coursework connections available to students who are in need of academic support include:
